Commando Comic Books

Published by DC Thomson, the Commando Picture Script books for boys were released at the rate of four every fortnight for about forty years. Although obviously aimed at young lads, it soon became apparent that members of our armed forces assiduously devoured them as well. Chris remembers them being virtually a negotiable currency at cadet summer camps and how the regular RAF were always keen to receive ‘cast-offs’. Years later, he started submitting scripts of his own, and found out why: Thomsons were scrupulous in their demand that every detail had to be technically accurate and were adamant that the enemy in the stories must never be depicted as inefficient or ill-disciplined.

Chris submitted four scripts in total, two of which - GLIDE INTO BATTLE and MIGHTY MIDGET - were accepted and published. It was a great thrill to see the latter selected as one of the “toughest 12 Commando comic books ever!” in the TRUE BRIT bumper edition. THE DIRTY DOZEN was published the previous year and both are a great read for all generations: dads will enjoy the nostalgia of uncomplicated youth and sons, a good escape from play stations and computer games. Chris recently read an ex-soldier’s biography in which he explained how his own military career was triggered by reading Commando. He surely was one of many.

Here then is your chance to explore a collection of boys’ adventure yarns from yesteryear.
